Medici & Telemedicine FAQ

Why should I invest in telemedicine?

Telemedicine is more valuable today than it has ever been. With travel constrictions due to coronavirus, telemedicine enables doctors and clinics to maintain the relationship with their clients, providing medical advice and care. Expanding beyond COVID-19, there are many reasons by telemedicine is valuable:

  • It discourages clients from deferring to the internet by knowing their veterinarian is available to triage cases (not Dr. Google!)
  • It's simply convenient and less expensive for clients.
  • Because you, the veterinarian, are worth it! Veterinarians have been practicing telemedicine without being compensated for it. Assigning a monetary value to these remote consults will cause clients to recognize and respect the importance of the doctor's time.
  • Unlike human telemedicine, veterinary telemedicine does not have to synchronous. Veterinarians can engage in asynchronous conversations– clients can text, send videos and/or pictures and the veterinarian can respond when they are able (it frees you from being tied to a phone).

Now is the ideal time to implement telemedicine and make clients aware this is a service that will extend past the quarantine.

How do I get started with Medici?

Penn Vet has partnered with Medici to bring their service to our customers. If you are interested in getting more information about Medici or taking your first step in signing up for the service, please give us a call at 800-233-0210 or fill out this form.

Once connected with a member of our Medici Sales Support Team, they will discuss pricing and walk you through the process of getting setup.

How will this change my work-life balance?

You are in control!

As the veterinarian, you can set your status as "online" or "off". While customers can still message you while you are "off", you will not be notified of them until you return to the app  ensuring you aren't glued to your phone!

Medici uses asynchronous conversations  clients can text, send videos and/or pictures and you can respond when you are able. You can set an expectation of how quickly you respond so clients are aware. Alternatively, if warranted, you can initiate a phone call or video chat.

Check out what Dr. Aaron Smiley, President of the Indiana Veterinary Association, leader of 2 practices, and early adoptor of Medici telemedicine, has to say about this matter:

"Fee-based telemedicine has reduced my workload and allowed me to work from home on Saturday mornings. The time I would otherwise spend calling owners back is streamlined with texting through Medici. As a result, I don’t have to play phone tag and almost all my consults occur during the work week. Initially, I was worried that I would get messages all hours of the day and night but after approximately 1,700 cases, I have found that clients do not send messages in the middle of the night.

I attribute the lack of calls during the night to four factors. First, I can turn Medici off. Second, people are more respectful of me when there is a value placed on the interaction. Third, if the animal is having an emergency that requires immediate in-person care, the client takes the animal to the ER clinic. Fourth, I am interacting with VCPR-compliant cases. These are people who know me and choose me to care for their pets."

What does Medici do with my data?

Unlike other "free" services you might use for telemedicine, Medici does not sell your data. Medici is a secure platform that encrypts messages to ensure privacy.

You have the ability to import your patient list from your EHR/PM in order to connect with your patients. You also have the ability to export data, such as pictures and conversations, from Medici to your EHR/PM. Medici does not use any of this data for any other purpose.

Is there a cost to my customer to use Medici?

The Medici app is free for your customer to download! The only payment that a customer will make is for the consultation fee that you set. There is no additional fee that the customer pays to Medici.

How do I receive my payments?

You set the consultation fee, which can be changed at any time, and choose when to charge a client.

When a client sets up their profile with the Medici app, they are required to enter a credit card number. No charge is made at that time, but the credit card is stored for a seamless payment experience.

When you set up your business for Medici, you will be asked to enter the information for the bank account that your consultation revenue should go into. Revenue from your client consultations are deposited into your bank on a monthly basis and you can easily keep track of your revenue within the app's Dashboard.

Does pet insurance cover telemedicine?

It depends on the plan's coverage. Some companies may enforce limits for telemedicine consults for covered conditions. At this time, we are not aware of a pet health insurance plan that does not cover telemedicine, but it is important that your clients read and understand their policy to know if it is covered.
